During the early spring of 1918 while I was taking a special course in systematic botany of the freshwater algae under the direction of Dr. John L. Sheldon, it was suggested to me that, for my thesis, I make a systematic study of the Algae of West Virginia in the localities of Morgantown, Monongalia county, and of Glenville and Tanner, Gilmer County. The period of collection extended from February to December 1918, probably the best season for their growth and development.
