Although there are numerous reports discussing the effects of herbicides on vegetation in Connecticut (Egler, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1954, 1966; Niering, 1967, 1968), there are no published reports dealing with the use of herbicides and their effect on vegetation in, Rhode Island. Niering, Egler, and Pound and Egler (1963) have demonstrated that undesirable arborescents and tall frutescents can be removed from right-of-ways by selective use of herbicides preserving and encouraging desirable low-growing frutescents such as huckleberry (Gaylussacia) and blueberry (Vaccinium).
