Thirty species and two additional varieties of violets are recognized in the present study as occurring naturally in the state of Tennessee. An interesting comparison may be made with the violets of Tennessee as listed in Gattinger’s flora (1901). Gattinger recognized twenty species plus two varieties. Names and species concepts in Viola have changed so much since this time, primarily due to the efforts of Brainerd (1921), that only twelve of the species names listed by Gattinger are still in use.
