Rare indeed is the botanist, no matter how remote his field of specialization from the study of floristics, who can wholly ignore the challenges presented by “rare plants”. This is true of professional and amateur botanists alike. However, when one attempts to formulate a working definition from the concepts of what constitutes a “rare plant”, a great variety of conflicting opinions appears.
