After being lost to science for sixty-one years, and listed as extinct, Betula uber (Ashe) Fern. has been located in Smyth County, Virginia. Douglas W. Ogle reported the plant on August 23, 1975, and a comprehensive paper by him and Peter Mazzeo will be included in Castanea in a later issue. (Also see Castanea 39:3. p. 273. 1974)
