Award Recipients

John E. Fairey

Raised in the small town of Rowesville, South Carolina, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina, studying botany with Drs. Wade Batson and John Herr. He went on to earn M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at West Virginia University under the supervision of Dr. Earl Core, one of the founders of what was then the Southern Appalachian Botanical Club (SABC).

Dr. Fairey played a major role in the SABC during his long faculty career at Clemson University. He served the SABC as Vice-President in 1981 and President in 1982 and remained active for the rest of his life, as the organization evolved into its current form as the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society (SABS).
