The genus Tilia is widely distributed in the eastern United States, ranging to Canada and Mexico. The several manuals available for use in this geographic area have varied with respect to the basswood species recognized, as is discussed later in the paper. The present study was concerned with the assignment of herbarium collections from my ecological studies to the proper species. In the course of this work the species designations in Tilia were reviewed.
