The discovery of Podostemum ceratophyllum Michx. in the white water stream portion of the Red River on the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky, and a preliminary review of the ecology and distribution of this species, have made the author aware of the potential of this plant of serving as an indicator of clean streams as well as showing environmental impacts on streams in the eastern USA and southern Canada.
