Book Review: Trees of the Central Hardwood Forests of North America: An Identification and Cultivation Guide

Yes, there are more than prairies in the Central portion of North America. In fact, the area of forests far exceeds other vegetation types in the area defined by the authors. According to them, “The Central Hardwood Forests lie in a broad band across eastern North America and are characterized by dominance of broad-leaved deciduous trees. They are bordered both north and south by evergreens: to the north by forests of conifers tolerating extreme winter conditions and to the south by forests of broad-leaved trees thriving in a frost-free environment. At both transitions there are extensive mixed deciduous-evergreen forests.
