The flora of the Highbanks (Doty’s Highbank), a part of Hueston Woods State Park, has been studied over a period of years, the result being the accumulation of a substantial list of native plants (several of which are endangered or threatened). The site is of vegetational interest in that it is an oak-hickory stand occurring in what is generally considered to be a beech-maple forest region. The local edaphic and geologic conditions probably contribute to the vegetational and floristic distinctiveness of the Highbanks site. We hope that our studies will lead to a better appreciation, and possible further preservation, of this unusual locality.
