Invasion of the South: The Ecological Impact and Control of Exotic Weeds in the Southeastern United States

Weeds are forcing us to become aware of their presence. Most of us consider weeds to be an agricultural problem which farmers can deal with by cultivation, herbicides and hard work. To inform about agricultural weeds, Holm et al. (1977) provide a list of the principal weeds of the world’s major agricultural crops. However, weeds are found increasingly in situations other than just agricultural. Weeds are impacting some of the natural habitats which we cherish. Why have these weeds become our implacable foes?
