Cymophyllus fraseri is unique among the Cyperaceae of the Appalachians because of its vibrant white inflorescences. This close relative of Carex is found in hardwood forests of the southern Appalachians from southern Pennsylvania to North Carolina and Tennessee (Clarkson 1961).
