Because of the difficulty involved in attempting to separate Viola sororia, V. papilionacea, and V. missouriensis in southern Illinois, the authors decided to make a study of the unlobed leaved, acaulescent, blue-flowered violets in Illinois. The study included annotation of herbarium material from Illinois, as well as field work in southern Illinois. In addition, specimens of these taxa were grown throughout the year under greenhouse conditions.
