Phytoplankton Studies Within the Virginia Barrier Islands II. Seasonal Study of Phytoplankton Within the Barrier Island Channels

Skeletonema costatum was the dominant species throughout a seasonal study of phytoplankton within channels of the Barrier Island complex. Diatoms and small sized species predominated, having major winter and spring population peaks that decreased into summer, followed by a lesser maximum in fall. 192 species were identified with the most common forms similar to phytoplankton abundant over the continental shelf.
