Only four species of Magnolia were known in Virginia (Massey, 1961) until the spring of this year. Magnolia acuminata L., the most common and widespread of the species in eastern North America, grows in broadleaf woods on the Piedmont, Blue Ridge, and non-calcareous areas west of the Blue Ridge in Virginia. It ranges, from southern Ontario to Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia.
