On the Occurrence of Lilium superbum L. in Illinois

During May of 1956, while exploring in a low, sub-swampy woodland at Lake Murphysboro State Park in Jackson County, Illinois, the author came upon an extensive colony of plants which appeared to represent the ordinary turk’s-cap lily (Lilium michiganense) of southern Illinois. About 100 plants were growing in rich leaf mold on the southwest-facing slope of a small rise adjacent to the creek of the valley floor. At the time of the discovery of this colony, the plants were 8-10 inches tall. A revisit to the area in late July revealed that all the plants had withered before flowering, after attaining a height of 18-24 inches.
