Smith Island lies about two miles east of the southern tip of the Cape Charles peninsula (which forms the eastern side of Chesapeake Bay), in Northampton County, Virginia. The island is one of the many barrier islands found along the Atlantic coast, and this one is separated from the mainland by Magothy Bay. The vegetation of these islands has not been extensively reported, but two recent papers on the vegetation of nearby islands are by Harvill (1965:1967).
